Greener Spring Cleaning With Homemade Laundry Soaps!!

Spring break is here for us and we are trying to catch up on being CRAZY BUSY in nursing school.

During my 12 week quarters I have to set aside things that I would normally do and I play catch up during my breaks.

This break between quarters is my last break before my last 3 months of nursing school and I am trying to clean to get the house ready for another 3 months of slacking off. ;)

Since I am always looking for new green ways to clean, I came across a handful of homemade laundry soaps blogs that I think are great and I just have to share them!

I found an amazing website, HomeTalk that I did not know about until a few weeks ago and I made a board for all of the laundry soap recipes to keep them all together!

Click on the picture above and it will take you to the board that I make for quick reference back to these amazing recipes!

If you have never cruised around on HomeTalk’s website before, you are in for a real treat!

The website is it is like Pinterest, but for home and garden, and so much fun to see what others are doing with their DIY projects!!!

Amazing Facial Scrub!

I am so happy to say that my At Home Spa Treatment blog post from last year has been amazing!

The original blog post has been pinned on Pinterest hundreds of times and it is the most viewed post on our blog!

I have been using this recipe for a little over a year now and my face has NEVER been Better!

No more breakouts or dry skin!

Yay Me!

So let me get on with the “How-To” of making an Amazing At Home Spa Treatment!

At Home Microdermabrasion!

Yes, I said that correctly Microdermabrasion!

You will need virgin coconut oil, baking soda, and pure essential oils.

See Simple ingredients! :)

I only use Young Living Essential Oils as they are Safe, Therapeutic Grade, Organic, and simply The Best oils we can use in or on our bodies.

The recipe can be doubled, tripled, or multiplied many times.

It is a simple 2:2:2 ratio of coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oil.

If you do multiply the recipe always remember increase

the essential oils to ensure the correct ratio.

2 Tablespoons Virgin Coconut Oil

2 Tablespoons Baking Soda

2 Drops Frankincense Essential Oil

( I use Frankincense, but Lavender, Helichrysum, and Geranium are also wonderful for our skin)

In a small bowl combine softened (not melted) Coconut Oil with Baking Soda into a paste, then add essential oils and mix throughly.

The recipe makes enough for 2 to 3 weeks of treatments and can be used in the shower with great ease.

That’s It!

Now you have just made your own at home

Microdermabrasion treatment!

Now, How to Use your homemade Microdermabrasion treatment.

Whether you are in the shower or in front of your sink, you will want to use this treatment on a wet face, not dry.

First wet you face with warm water, use a small amount of the mixture and begin to massage your entire face, throat, and décolleté with small, circular motions in the upwards direction.

You do not need to scrub the mixture, the baking soda will exfoliate for you without having to scrub.

I follow this treatment up with a homemade mixture of coconut oil and frankincense oil or my New Favorite Essential Beauty Serum!

This treatment is also great for rough elbows and dry hands and feet.

It truly is simply amazing!

Lavender Air Freshener!

Life can be Stinky!

Thankfully, we have natural ways to freshen the air!

For years we used the “Air Fresheners” that you shake on the carpet and vacuum up without any thought of WHAT the product was made from. Since moving to our farm house almost 3 years ago, we have been trying to “clean up” our chemical use and use more all natural products. I have to say that the thought of changing products we had been using for years was mentally hard, but not difficult. The more labels I read of the products we had been using for many years, the more I knew we had to make a change for the better. We get our water from a well on our property and we have a septic system for the treatment of our waste water. Knowing how these systems work, I knew I had to do something to reduce the amount of chemicals in our home and daily life. About 2 years ago we began making our own laundry soap instead of buying big containers from the big box stores. Making our own products has now turned into a passion to see what we can make and stop purchasing from the big box stores. Recently I thought I would try to make a new air freshener for our guest bathroom and it turned out GREAT! The best thing about it is that it can be made different ways  and it can be used different ways! Not bad for a simple 5 minute project that is 100% chemical free! :)

Lavender Air Freshener Recipe

1/4 to 1/2 Cup of baking soda

1/4 to 1/2 Cup of dried lavender

10 to 15 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil

1 Glass container or mason jar

Mix baking soda and dried lavender together, add lavender essential oil and mix well. Place into a glass container or mason jar with holes (I found mine at Target in the dollar bin) in the lid. Place in desired area and enjoy! Add 5 to 10 drops of lavender essential oil every couple of weeks as needed.

Lavender Carpet Freshener Recipe

1 Cup of baking soda

10 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil

1 Glass container or mason jar

Mix baking soda and lavender essential oil together and allow to blend together overnight before using. Sprinkle on carpet and vacuum as you would other carpet fresheners.

For The Love Of Corned Beef

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

As a special Thank you to our Blog and Facebook Fans, we are sharing our secret corned beef recipe! For years we have been asked how we make it and why it is so different than what they have had in the past. We have even won Non corned beef eaters over with our recipe! It is always so nice to hear people say “Wow! I never expected it to taste like this!” :)

So what is our secret you might ask? Well, besides being Very Irish, our secret with it is we let the meat cook for hours and hours on high in the crock pot. NEVER EVER BOIL! Boiling corned beef is how it is normally cooked and it is why so many people do not care for it. :(

Making mouth watering Corned Beef is easy and it does not take very much to make it.

1 Crockpot

1 3 to 5 pound Corned Beef Brisket or Round with seasoning packet

1 to 2 pounds of Fresh Carrots

1 to 2 pounds of Red or Yukon Gold Potatoes

1 Head of Green Cabbage

1/2 to 1 cup of Brown Sugar

9 to 13 Hours of Cooking Time

If we are doing a big party and we need to lots, I will cook them overnight. If we are only doing 1, we put it in on high in the morning and let it cook for at least 8 hours if not 10 or 12. We add the veggies in about 1/2 through and let them cook. Once we take the meat out, we put it in a cast iron skillet and then drizzle some of the cooking water over the top. Next we put a layer of brown sugar on top and drizzle a little more cooking water and then another layer of brown sugar. We let it bake in the oven at 375 for about 30 minutes and baste it like you do a turkey with its juices every 10 minutes. Once the meat is taken out of the oven, place it on a serving platter and drizzle the brown sugar glaze over the top. Slice meat against the grain and serve with veggies and mustard or horseradish.

We hope you enjoy our recipe! Let us know if you have any questions!

Peace, Love, & Hugs!

Amazing Detox Bath

There is something so soothing about a relaxing warm bath after a long day.

For years I was one who would take a bubble bath with a bubble bath product from a well known chain store that is famous for after holiday sales. I would stock up on yummy scented bath products thinking I was doing something good and relaxing for my body. Little did I know that the products I was soaking in was loaded with chemicals that are harmful for our skin. :(

Thankfully, I was able to crawl out of my bubble bliss and learn about the health benefits of taking a detox bath. Due to our environment, our bodies are not getting the proper amount of magnesium that we need. Our bodies NEED magnesium to survive, yet our soil is being depleted and the typical American diet severely lacks the amount we need.  I have been doing detox baths for about 3 years now and I am SO GLAD I started doing them. A little over a year ago I started using Young Living Essential Oils  and I started adding them to my detox baths. I try to take a detox bath at least once a week, if not more. There are some weeks that I do not get to take one and I really miss it.  I use lavender essential oil most of the time, however, I change it up depending on my mood. If I really want to relax and I am going right to bed after a detox bath, I do a combo of Lavender and Peace & Calming essential oils.

Amazing Detox Bath Recipe

2 Cups of Epsom Salt

1/2 Cup of Baking Soda

10 Drops of Essential Oil

( I only use Therapeutic Grade Young Living Essential Oils)

1 Bathtub of Hot Water ( Not too hot, but not warm)

20 to 30 Minutes of Soaking Time

I like combine the epsom salts, baking soda, and essential oil together before adding to the water in the tub. By adding the essential oils to the epsom salts and baking soda, the oil absorbs into the salt mixture and does not float on the top of the water. As we all know oil and water do not mix, therefore, adding essential oils to the bath water will not be as beneficial as it could be. Once the tub is at your desired soaking level, sit down in and relax for 20 to 30 minutes. After you are finished soaking, drain the tub while sitting in the tub, allowing your body time to rest before getting out of the tub. If you are pressed for time or you do not have a bath tub, you can still enjoy the benefits of a detox bath by doing a foot bath and reducing the amount of products.

Detox Foot Bath Recipe

1 Cup of Epsom Salts

1/4 Cup of Baking Soda

5 Drops of Essential Oil

10 to 15 minutes of soaking time

The above recipes make a great gift for friends and family.

I like to make up a few jars during the holidays and have them for just in case gifts.

You never know when an unexpected guest will stop by during the holidays and bring a gift. ;)

Brain Fuel

Do you ever wake up in the morning and have to drag yourself out of bed wondering how am I going to find time for a healthy breakfast?

I am SURE that I am NOT alone in this scenario!

Today was one of those days when I was in a super hurry to get to school for an exam, yet I needed some brain fuel.

There is nothing worse than getting to school for an exam and not having any energy to get through the exam, much less get an A on it.

This morning I was in a hurry to get out the door to school, but I NEEDED breakfast!

Taking a quick look in the fridge I saw a bottle of NingXia Red, a box of NingXia Nitro, and a box of coconut milk.

Thats when the magic happened!

I grabbed what I saw and started mixing!

I have had NingXia Red and coconut milk together before, but I have never added a NingXia Nitro to it.

Well, let’s just say this is going to become a regular habit now!

Almost 12 hours later I am still going strong and I got an A on my pharmacology exam this morning! ;)

So, without making you wait ANY longer here is the low down on this amazing concoction.

Brain Fuel Recipe

2 oz NingXia Red

1 tube NingXia Nitro

4 to 6 oz Coconut Milk or other non-dairy milk of your choice

3 or 4 Drops of your favorite Young Living Citrus Essential Oil (ONLY YOUNG LIVING!)

Ice and Water to make 16 oz

Optional add in: 2 scoops of Balance Complete Protein Powder

Mix all ingredients together in a glass container or blender if using protein powder and Enjoy!

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Not long after moving to our farm house, I began searching for cleaning products that would not damage our ground water.

We are on a well and septic system, so making sure that we do not add toxic chemicals to our water is important.

As an avid Pinterest user,

I came across many different websites for recipes.

Not sure how well DIY laundry detergent would work,

I was a little leery about trying it.

However, once I made it and used it the first time,

 I was pleasantly surprised!

I have been making it for almost 2 years

and I have had very good results with.

Since I started using essential oils the beginning of this year,

I started adding a few drops of

different oils to the batch when I make it.

I am extremely happy with the cost savings of DIY detergent as well!

1 box of Borax $3.99

1 Box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda $3.99

2 Bars of Fels-Naptha Soap $1.49

10 drops of your favorite essential oil under $1.00

Total Price $10.96 before tax!

Not to shabby for ingredients that will make  more than 2 batches of laundry detergent that will last over 2 months for 2 people.

DIY Laundry Detergent Recipe

1 Cup of Borax

1 Cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

1 Bar of Fels-Naptha Soap – grated

10 drops of your favorite essential oil

I use Thieves or Purification Blends

Place all ingredients except for essential oil in a blender or ninja type blender with lid and pulse until incorporated

Once incorporated, transfer to storage container

and add essential oil drops

Allow several hours or overnight for essential oils to

incorporate into detergent before use.

Note – I have started adding the essential oil drops to the washing soda a day or two prior to making detergent to avoid having to wait for the oils to incorporate into mixture

I use 1/8 of a cup per load of laundry

This recipe makes enough detergent for 2 people

for over a months worth of laundry!

There you have it!

Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent that is MUCH cheaper than pre made detergent and Much safer for the environment!

I hope you will give this a try!

Let me know if you have any questions or if you would like more information on the essential oils that I use.

Peace, Love, & Hugs!
