Lavender Air Freshener!

IMG_2368

Life can be Stinky!

Thankfully, we have natural ways to freshen the air!

For years we used the “Air Fresheners” that you shake on the carpet and vacuum up without any thought of WHAT the product was made from. Since moving to our farm house almost 3 years ago, we have been trying to “clean up” our chemical use and use more all natural products. I have to say that the thought of changing products we had been using for years was mentally hard, but not difficult. The more labels I read of the products we had been using for many years, the more I knew we had to make a change for the better. We get our water from a well on our property and we have a septic system for the treatment of our waste water. Knowing how these systems work, I knew I had to do something to reduce the amount of chemicals in our home and daily life. About 2 years ago we began making our own laundry soap instead of buying big containers from the big box stores. Making our own products has now turned into a passion to see what we can make and stop purchasing from the big box stores. Recently I thought I would try to make a new air freshener for our guest bathroom and it turned out GREAT! The best thing about it is that it can be made different ways  and it can be used different ways! Not bad for a simple 5 minute project that is 100% chemical free! :)

Lavender Air Freshener Recipe

1/4 to 1/2 Cup of baking soda

1/4 to 1/2 Cup of dried lavender

10 to 15 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil

1 Glass container or mason jar

Mix baking soda and dried lavender together, add lavender essential oil and mix well. Place into a glass container or mason jar with holes (I found mine at Target in the dollar bin) in the lid. Place in desired area and enjoy! Add 5 to 10 drops of lavender essential oil every couple of weeks as needed.

Lavender Carpet Freshener Recipe

1 Cup of baking soda

10 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil

1 Glass container or mason jar

Mix baking soda and lavender essential oil together and allow to blend together overnight before using. Sprinkle on carpet and vacuum as you would other carpet fresheners.

For The Love Of Corned Beef

IMG_1984

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

As a special Thank you to our Blog and Facebook Fans, we are sharing our secret corned beef recipe! For years we have been asked how we make it and why it is so different than what they have had in the past. We have even won Non corned beef eaters over with our recipe! It is always so nice to hear people say “Wow! I never expected it to taste like this!” :)

IMG_1986

So what is our secret you might ask? Well, besides being Very Irish, our secret with it is we let the meat cook for hours and hours on high in the crock pot. NEVER EVER BOIL! Boiling corned beef is how it is normally cooked and it is why so many people do not care for it. :(

Making mouth watering Corned Beef is easy and it does not take very much to make it.

1 Crockpot

1 3 to 5 pound Corned Beef Brisket or Round with seasoning packet

1 to 2 pounds of Fresh Carrots

1 to 2 pounds of Red or Yukon Gold Potatoes

1 Head of Green Cabbage

1/2 to 1 cup of Brown Sugar

9 to 13 Hours of Cooking Time

If we are doing a big party and we need to lots, I will cook them overnight. If we are only doing 1, we put it in on high in the morning and let it cook for at least 8 hours if not 10 or 12. We add the veggies in about 1/2 through and let them cook. Once we take the meat out, we put it in a cast iron skillet and then drizzle some of the cooking water over the top. Next we put a layer of brown sugar on top and drizzle a little more cooking water and then another layer of brown sugar. We let it bake in the oven at 375 for about 30 minutes and baste it like you do a turkey with its juices every 10 minutes. Once the meat is taken out of the oven, place it on a serving platter and drizzle the brown sugar glaze over the top. Slice meat against the grain and serve with veggies and mustard or horseradish.

We hope you enjoy our recipe! Let us know if you have any questions!

Amazing Detox Bath

IMG_1188

There is something so soothing about a relaxing warm bath after a long day.

For years I was one who would take a bubble bath with a bubble bath product from a well known chain store that is famous for after holiday sales. I would stock up on yummy scented bath products thinking I was doing something good and relaxing for my body. Little did I know that the products I was soaking in was loaded with chemicals that are harmful for our skin. :(

Thankfully, I was able to crawl out of my bubble bliss and learn about the health benefits of taking a detox bath. Due to our environment, our bodies are not getting the proper amount of magnesium that we need. Our bodies NEED magnesium to survive, yet our soil is being depleted and the typical American diet severely lacks the amount we need.  I have been doing detox baths for about 3 years now and I am SO GLAD I started doing them. A little over a year ago I started using Young Living Essential Oils  and I started adding them to my detox baths. I try to take a detox bath at least once a week, if not more. There are some weeks that I do not get to take one and I really miss it.  I use lavender essential oil most of the time, however, I change it up depending on my mood. If I really want to relax and I am going right to bed after a detox bath, I do a combo of Lavender and Peace & Calming essential oils.

Amazing Detox Bath Recipe

2 Cups of Epsom Salt

1/2 Cup of Baking Soda

10 Drops of Essential Oil

( I only use Therapeutic Grade Young Living Essential Oils)

1 Bathtub of Hot Water ( Not too hot, but not warm)

20 to 30 Minutes of Soaking Time

I like combine the epsom salts, baking soda, and essential oil together before adding to the water in the tub. By adding the essential oils to the epsom salts and baking soda, the oil absorbs into the salt mixture and does not float on the top of the water. As we all know oil and water do not mix, therefore, adding essential oils to the bath water will not be as beneficial as it could be. Once the tub is at your desired soaking level, sit down in and relax for 20 to 30 minutes. After you are finished soaking, drain the tub while sitting in the tub, allowing your body time to rest before getting out of the tub. If you are pressed for time or you do not have a bath tub, you can still enjoy the benefits of a detox bath by doing a foot bath and reducing the amount of products.

Detox Foot Bath Recipe

1 Cup of Epsom Salts

1/4 Cup of Baking Soda

5 Drops of Essential Oil

10 to 15 minutes of soaking time

The above recipes make a great gift for friends and family.

I like to make up a few jars during the holidays and have them for just in case gifts.

You never know when an unexpected guest will stop by during the holidays and bring a gift. ;)

Brain Fuel

IMG_0973

Do you ever wake up in the morning and have to drag yourself out of bed wondering how am I going to find time for a healthy breakfast?

I am SURE that I am NOT alone in this scenario!

Today was one of those days when I was in a super hurry to get to school for an exam, yet I needed some brain fuel.

There is nothing worse than getting to school for an exam and not having any energy to get through the exam, much less get an A on it.

This morning I was in a hurry to get out the door to school, but I NEEDED breakfast!

Taking a quick look in the fridge I saw a bottle of NingXia Red, a box of NingXia Nitro, and a box of coconut milk.

Thats when the magic happened!

I grabbed what I saw and started mixing!

I have had NingXia Red and coconut milk together before, but I have never added a NingXia Nitro to it.

Well, let’s just say this is going to become a regular habit now!

Almost 12 hours later I am still going strong and I got an A on my pharmacology exam this morning! ;)

So, without making you wait ANY longer here is the low down on this amazing concoction.

Brain Fuel Recipe

2 oz NingXia Red

1 tube NingXia Nitro

4 to 6 oz Coconut Milk or other non-dairy milk of your choice

3 or 4 Drops of your favorite Young Living Citrus Essential Oil (ONLY YOUNG LIVING!)

Ice and Water to make 16 oz

Optional add in: 2 scoops of Balance Complete Protein Powder

Mix all ingredients together in a glass container or blender if using protein powder and Enjoy!

Homemade Laundry Detergent

IMG_5324

Not long after moving to our farm house, I began searching for cleaning products that would not damage our ground water.

We are on a well and septic system, so making sure that we do not add toxic chemicals to our water is important.

As an avid Pinterest user,

I came across many different websites for recipes.

Not sure how well DIY laundry detergent would work,

I was a little leery about trying it.

However, once I made it and used it the first time,

 I was pleasantly surprised!

I have been making it for almost 2 years

and I have had very good results with.

Since I started using essential oils the beginning of this year,

I started adding a few drops of

different oils to the batch when I make it.

I am extremely happy with the cost savings of DIY detergent as well!

1 box of Borax $3.99

1 Box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda $3.99

2 Bars of Fels-Naptha Soap $1.49

10 drops of your favorite essential oil under $1.00

Total Price $10.96 before tax!

Not to shabby for ingredients that will make  more than 2 batches of laundry detergent that will last over 2 months for 2 people.

IMG_5333

DIY Laundry Detergent Recipe

1 Cup of Borax

1 Cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

1 Bar of Fels-Naptha Soap – grated

10 drops of your favorite essential oil

I use Thieves or Purification Blends

Place all ingredients except for essential oil in a blender or ninja type blender with lid and pulse until incorporated

Once incorporated, transfer to storage container

and add essential oil drops

Allow several hours or overnight for essential oils to

incorporate into detergent before use.

Note – I have started adding the essential oil drops to the washing soda a day or two prior to making detergent to avoid having to wait for the oils to incorporate into mixture

I use 1/8 of a cup per load of laundry

This recipe makes enough detergent for 2 people

for over a months worth of laundry!

At Home Spa Treatment

IMG_4390

IMG_4391

These days with school and the farm I find it hard to get my

“Me Time.”

With my limited free time, I am having to find ways to still be able to enjoy my spa treatments.

I will openly admit that I am a Pinterest Junky and I have to be very careful about the amount of time I spend scrolling through thousands upon thousands of health and beauty pins.

I once called Facebook the “Black Hole” for time management,

but now it is Pinterest for me. ;)

My only problem with Pinterest is that I “Pin” something and then I cannot remember where I “Pinned” it.

I am sure, I am Not Alone with this!

With that said, I have “pinned” many different “Spa Treatment” things all over the place, but where I could not tell you without going on a 2 or 3 hour search through all of my pins.

However, I did find something that I was able to remember the ingredients (3 things I have in my home at all times!)

And I was able to make it without having

to find the pin with great success!

Yay Me!

So let me get on with the

“How-To” of making an Amazing At Home Spa Treatment!

At Home Microdermabrasion!

Yes, I said that correctly Microdermabrasion!

You will need virgin coconut oil, baking soda, and pure essential oils.

See Simple ingredients! :)

and can be used in the shower with great ease.

 IMG_4389

That’s It!

Now you have just made your own at home

Microdermabrasion treatment!

Now, How to Use your homemade Microdermabrasion treatment.

Whether you are in the shower or in front of your sink, you will want to use this treatment on a wet face, not dry.

First wet you face with warm water, use 1/3 to 1/2 of the mixture and begin to massage your entire face, throat, and décolleté with small, circular motions in the upwards direction.

You do not need to scrub the mixture, the baking soda will exfoliate for you without having to scrub.

I follow this treatment up with a homemade mixture of

coconut oil and frankincense oil.

This treatment is also great for rough elbows and dry hands and feet.

It truly is simply amazing!

Here is what Wikipedia says about Microdermabrasion:

“Microdermabrasion may be performed to help diminish the appearance of superficial hyperpigmentation, and photo-damage, as well as diminish fine lines, wrinkles, acne, and shallow acne scars. A further benefit of microdermabrasion is enhanced skin penetration by other skin creams and serums. Removing dead skin (startum corneum of the epidermis) will aid in the penetration of skin care products and medications by up to 10-50%. The controlled skin exfoliation afforded by microdermabrasion will afford make-up and self-tanning products to go on much more smoothly.”

Here is a little information on the benefits of using

Frankincense on our skin.

Ancient peoples quickly learned the value

of frankincense in skin care.

The Egyptians made rejuvenating face masks with it, and Ovid, the Roman poet, noted in his book on skin care (Medicamina Faciei) that frankincense was excellent for toilet purposes.

Frankincense continues to be an impressive skin care ingredient.

While often ignored in modern formularies, it is astringent, slightly anti-inflammatory, and has incredible ability to

rejuvenate skin and eradicate wrinkles.

Its antioxidant properties and cell regeneration abilities lead to smoother, more youthful skin.

It tones and lifts skin to increase firmness and minimize pores, which is why the Egyptians used it in facial masks.

Excellent for acne care because of its antiseptic properties.

One of the more impressive benefits of Frankincense in skin care is its ability to prevent and fade scars.

It has been reported to reduce the appearance of discoloration and redness due to blemishes, irritation, and even stretch marks.

Here is a little info on why I ONLY use Young Living Essential Oils.

When I was new to essential oils, something that I learned really quickly was that there is a BIG(really important) difference between the types of Essential Oils.

For all I knew, oils were oils, and even though I knew about lavender scented products in the grocery store – I had no idea about the possibilities of transforming my health, naturally, with Essential Oils.

Let me explain, all Young Living Essentials Oils are

Therapeutic grade and Earth Kosher-Certified.

That means care has been given to every single drop, to ensure that the medicinal properties have been retained.

There are 4 Grades of Essential Oils:

Grade A oils are pure therapeutic quality and are usually made from organically grown plants distilled at the proper temperatures using steam distillation.

Grade B oils are food grade; they may contain synthetics, pesticides, fertilizers, extenders, or carrier oils.

Grade C oils are perfume grade and may contain the same type of adulterating chemicals as food grade oils.

They usually contain solvents which are used to gain a higher yield of oil per harvest. Solvents are normally cancerous.

Floral Water is a byproduct of the distillation process, a very high quality if it comes from a Grade A distillation process.

Accordingly it is of low quality if it comes from poor quality raw materials and or poor distillation processes.

It is usually found in skin and hair products.

A WORD ABOUT PURITY

Don’t be fooled!

Young Living’s oils are therapeutic and medicinal.

They are derived directly from the plant – not in a laboratory – and they are never extended or adulterated with chemicals.

Don’t think that you can buy less expensive

essential oils and get the same results.

ADULTERATED OILS AND THEIR DANGERS

Today much of the lavender oil sold in America is the hybrid called lavandin, which is cut with chemicals to improve the fragrance.

Then solvents are added and it is sold in the

United States as lavender oil.

Most consumers don’t know the difference, and are happy to buy it for $3 to $10 per half ounce in health food stores, beauty salons, grocery and department stores, and through mail order.

Some people wonder why they do not get the benefit they expected and conclude that essential oils do not have much value. Most likely, they purchased either a synthetic or adulterated oils.

Adulterated and mislabeled essential oils present

dangers for consumers.

One woman who had heard of the ability of lavender oil to heal burns used “lavender oil” purchased from a local health food store when she spilled boiling water on her arm.

But the pain intensified and the burn worsened, so she later complained that lavender oil was worthless for healing burns.

When her “lavender” oil was analyzed, it was found to be lavandin, the hybrid lavender that is chemically very different.

Adulterated oils that are cut with synthetic extenders can cause rashes, burning, and skin irritations.

Solvents can all cause allergic reactions,

besides being devoid of any therapeutic effects.

Even so-called “nature identical” essential oils (structured essential oils that have been chemically duplicated using

5 to 15 of the essential oil’s primary chemical compounds in synthetic form) can produce unwanted side effects or toxicities.

Isolated compounds may be toxic;

however pure essential oils, in most cases, are not.

This is because natural essential oils contain hundreds of different compounds, some of which balance

and counteract each other’s effects.

Quality does matter — and your health is worth it.
