15 Uses For Peppermint Essential Oil

Here are a 15 of my favorite

uses for Peppermint Oil:

1. Stomach Ache

Peppermint essential oil is great for taming tummy aches. Apply a few drops to the bottoms of your feet and on your abdomen, over the spot(s) where it hurts. 1 Drop on the tip of your tongue works like magic! (Just be sure you have 100% pure essential oils if doing this.)

2. Breath Freshener

I carry a small vial of peppermint essential oil wherever I go and one thing I use it for is bad breath. If I’ve had garlic or a cup of coffee that’s left my mouth a little … unpleasant, I’ll put a drop on the tip of my tongue for minty fresh breath. (Just be sure you have 100% pure essential oils if doing this.)

3. Nausea

Peppermint essential oil is great for quelling nausea, too. This works best for me when I open the bottle and inhale deeply until the nausea stops. If it persists, I’ll usually put a drop on the tip of my tongue, which helps quickly.

4. Cooling

Peppermint contains menthol, which is very cooling. During the summer heat, I use peppermint essential oil to help me stay cool. I do that by diluting a few drops in a tablespoon of coconut oil and applying that to my chest and back of the neck.

5. Focus

When I need a little extra help focusing on a project, I apply a mixture of peppermint and orange essential oils to the back of my neck. I just place a drop of each in the palm of my hand, rub my hands together, inhale, then rub it on the back of my neck.

6. Lip Balm

Making your own lip balm is super simple and you need just 3 ingredients.
3 Tablespoons grated beeswax or beeswax pastilles
½ cup coconut oil
8 drops peppermint essential oil (find 100% pure essential oils here)

Melt the coconut oil and wax on low heat. Remove from heat and stir in essential oil. Pour into containers and allow to cool. Cap and label.

7. Toothpaste

Making your own toothpaste is super simple! All you need is baking soda, sea salt and peppermint essential oil. (2/3 cup baking soda, 1 tsp fine sea salt (optional – direct application of the minerals in sea salt is great for teeth, but can be left out if the taste is too salty), 10-15 drops peppermint essential oil (or add your favorite flavor – spearmint, orange, etc.), and filtered water (add to desired consistency)

8. Energizing

Need a little pick-me-up? Inhale the aroma of peppermint essential oil. Peppermint is refreshing and energizing and can help give you feel more alert if you’re getting sluggish.

9. Headache

Got a headache? Use peppermint essential oil. Simply apply a drop or two to your temples, forehead and the back of your neck. You may want to dilute the oil first in a carrier oil, like coconut or almond oil, because it can be very strong around your eyes.

Speaking of eyes, watch out for those. Ouch! If you do get essential oils in your eyes or other mucous membranes, dilute with a carrier oil, not water.

10. Cleaning

When you whip up your own all-purpose cleaner, make sure to add some peppermint essential oil. Not only does it smell delicious, but it’s antibacterial and antifungal as well.

11. Muscle Relaxer

That pleasant scent of commercial muscle relaxing creams? Peppermint! Peppermint is great for relaxing sore muscles and can help soothe inflammation. Use 3 drops of peppermint essential oil in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and apply as needed.

12. Foot Refresher

Feet feeling a little tired? Give them some TLC with peppermint essential oil. Soak your feet in a basin of warm water and add a few drops of refreshing peppermint essential oil. For a little extra love, apply a little coconut oil when you’re done.

13. Mood-lifting

Whenever I’m feeling a little blue, I like to inhale peppermint essential oil. I’m not sure if it’s the energizing properties or the bit of nostalgia, but it quickly lifts my mood. It can also be diffused in the air.

14. Congestion

Having a hard time breathing? Diffuse some peppermint essential oil in the air with an aromatherapy diffuser to help clear congestion. (Find aromatherapy diffusers here.)

15. Ant Repellent

Use peppermint essential oils to get rid of ants naturally. Put a few drops of peppermint essential oil on a cotton ball and place in areas ants are crawling around to discourage ants from coming back.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

Not long after moving to our farm house, I began searching for cleaning products that would not damage our ground water.

We are on a well and septic system, so making sure that we do not add toxic chemicals to our water is important.

As an avid Pinterest user,

I came across many different websites for recipes.

Not sure how well DIY laundry detergent would work,

I was a little leery about trying it.

However, once I made it and used it the first time,

I was pleasantly surprised!

I have been making it for almost 2 years

and I have had very good results with.

Since I started using essential oils the beginning of this year,

I started adding a few drops of

different oils to the batch when I make it.

I am extremely happy with the cost savings of DIY detergent as well!

1 box of Borax $3.99

1 Box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda $3.99

2 Bars of Fels-Naptha Soap $1.49

10 drops of your favorite essential oil under $1.00

Total Price $10.96 before tax!

Not to shabby for ingredients that will make more than 2 batches of laundry detergent that will last over 2 months for 2 people.

DIY Laundry Detergent Recipe

1 Cup of Borax

1 Cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

1 Bar of Fels-Naptha Soap – grated

10 drops of your favorite essential oil

I use Thieves or Purification Blends

Place all ingredients except for essential oil in a blender or ninja type blender with lid and pulse until incorporated

Once incorporated, transfer to storage container

and add essential oil drops

Allow several hours or overnight for essential oils to

incorporate into detergent before use.

Note – I have started adding the essential oil drops to the washing soda a day or two prior to making detergent to avoid having to wait for the oils to incorporate into mixture

I use 1/8 of a cup per load of laundry

This recipe makes enough detergent for 2 people

for over a months worth of laundry!

There you have it!

Homemade Powdered Laundry Detergent that is MUCH cheaper than pre made detergent and Much safer for the environment!

Dental Checkup Update!

Before I get into how Happy I am about my last dental appointment, let me give you a little background on why my dental appointments are such a HUGE deal for me.

In July of 2012 I had The Worst dental experiences of my life!

I was ready to pull one of my back molars out with a pair of pliers in the middle of the night due to the pain I was in.

I had never had such intense and unbearable pain in my life as I did when I had a root canal go bad and abscess.

Here is how the problem started –

During the summer of 2011 I started to notice that one of molars was bothering me and I went to my dentist for treatment.

Once my dentist took x-rays and looked at my tooth that was bothering me, she said that the root canal that I had years prior had gone bad.

At this point I was given 2 options, one option was to have the tooth extracted and have an implant put in and the other option was to have the root canal redone and hope for the best.

I decided to go for option number 2 since it was not going to remove the tooth.

Little did I know that after spending over a month going to the dentist for appointments and over $1,000.00 for the root canal and crown that I would be back in the dentist chair less than a year later and in INTENSE PAIN!

Had I known then what I know now, I would never had to go through the pain and large amounts of money.

Did you know that a change in altitude can cause tooth pain if you have problem with a tooth?

Sadly, I found out the hard way how a change in altitude can turn a small toothache into the WORST PAIN EVER!

We had a nice weekend planned with friends at Lake Tulloch and my tooth started bothering me again the morning before we left.

I did not think much of it as we were getting ready to leave and I had a dentist appointment for a cleaning in 2 weeks.

However, as we drove to the lake and climbed elevation my tooth started to bother me more and more.

By the time we were at the lake I was reaching for pain meds and something to numb my gums.

Needless to say that over the course of the weekend my small toothache turned into a HUGE unbearable toothache.

I was in so much pain that I was not able to enjoy our weekend getaway like I should and I did not do any of the fun things I normally do while at the lake. 😦

Once we got home Sunday night I put in a call to my dentist office for an emergency appointment first thing Monday morning.

I was not able to sleep very much Sunday night due to the pain and when I finally got up I noticed that my tooth had become abscessed.

Due to the abscess my dentist did not want to do anything until the infection went away, but I was in such pain that I asked her to pull the tooth while I was there.

Which, 3 days later I found out why she did not want to pull the tooth while it was infected.

I ended up in even more pain once dry socket set in where the tooth once was.

The pain from the dry socket was even WORSE than the abscess! 😦

Thankfully after pain meds, antibiotics, and TWO WEEKS of healing I was finally back to “normal” or at least so I thought.

At 39 my gums were starting to show signs of gingivitis that was turning into periodontitis.

I was put on a 3 month checkup schedule for deep cleaning to bring my teeth and gums back to normal.

During the next 6 months I tried many different toothpastes trying to find THE ONE that would help my teeth and gums.

Thankfully in February of this year I found Young Living Essential Oils and I tried Thieves toothpaste! OMG! Am I ever glad I did!

In 2 short months between starting to use Thieves and my next 3 month appointment my teeth showed drastic improvement!

I was so happy when my dentist said that my teeth and gums looked much better and put me on a 4 month checkup schedule. 🙂

My next appointment was scheduled for August and I was hoping that it would be better than the last appointment!

I am SO HAPPY to say that my appointment this month was even BETTER than my last apppointment!

Not only did my dentist RAVE over how well my teeth and gums are doing,

she said the words I have been waiting for what seems like years!

6 Months!!!! YAY!!!! No more having to pay out of pocket for 2 extra appointments each year!!!!!!

Good Things!

As the summer is winding down, I am excited about my summer quarter of nursing school nearing its end!

With the end of the summer almost here, I have begun looking back at what an Amazing summer I have had!

We were very lucky to have a weekend away with amazing friends last weekend at Lake Tulloch!

Looking back at the pictures I took makes me want to buy a Lake House!

Due to school being year round we had to change our vacation plans around this year and I am looking forward to a few days away once the summer quarter is over!

Just as the official start of summer began, I was able to leave a career of over 16 years to begin my nursing program full time!

I will be forever grateful to my family and friends for all of their amazing support as I begin to pursue a new career and fulfill a long time dream to become an RN!

Looking back on the last few months of this year, I am very happy to say that it has been an amazing beginning to my new career!

This year started off with a little uncertainty whether I would be accepted into a new RN program or not.

However, I did not let that stop me from pursuing my dream.

I have always wanted to help others with their health and live the life of their dreams.

Thankfully, I have been able to do both this year!

Make A Difference, Not Just A Living has been my motto this year!

I was not sure how this year was going to start since I did not know I was accepted into the RN program until the middle of February and I had less than a month notice!

However, I did not let that stop me from starting a new endeavor and helping others!

I am so very thankful for being able to start my Young Living Essential Oils business and learning even more about natural healing!
