Bloom!

IMG_0866
Are you Blooming where you are planted? 💕

Some of us are able to bloom where are planted at an early age. 🌸

However, many of us have to go through the trenches before we begin to bloom. 🌷

And sadly, there are some that are never able to bloom. 🥀

We are designed by God to bloom and it can take hard work to dig deep before we begin to sprout our roots. 🌱

If you are not blooming where you are in life today, take a moment and ask yourself where you see yourself in a year. 🤔

If you feel like you need change, do something to begin that change. 💐

Not everyone is going to make drastic changes to change, but some might need them before change can take force.🌻

I am one that needed major changes before I sprouted my roots and began to bloom. 🌺

If you are thinking you are ready to bloom, but need a little guidance, send me a message and I will be happy to help get your roots sprouted. ❤️

6 years ago, my life was drastically changed when I started taking control of my own health and using natural options. Our bodies are amazing machines and we are able to function in amazing ways if we are in tune to our own bodies.

The Day I Caved and My Life Forever Changed!

Have you ever had that Gut Feeling about something, YET went against it because of how others reacted to it? Well, that is what happened to me on July 19, 2017! I spent 5 days in the ER and hospital due to a kidney infection that had gone into my bloodstream. I was not feeling good the day before I went to the ER, but I had NOT idea that I had something so serious going on.

During my 1st ER visit, I received a dose of IV antibiotics, a liter of fluid, and some pain medications before being sent home with a diagnosis of anasymptomatic urinary tract infection. Thankfully and I mean THANKFULLY, the doctor order blood cultures when I first arrived at the ER. If it was NOT for those blood cultures, I would have gotten a LOT sicker before going back to the ER after the experience I had already had…………

Less than 24 hours after I had the blood cultures done, I received a phone call from the NP at the ER asking me to come back ASAP! Being an RN, I knew that something was very wrong, however, she would not tell me why I needed to come back ASAP. That part still bothers me to this day and I would NEVER call a patient that has little to NO medical background the way she did! Sadly, the entire experience I had at the hospital that I went to was LESS and I mean LESS than pleasant!!!

I was home alone when I got the phone call to come back ASAP, I had JUST taken a pain pill, my husband was on day 1 of his 2 day shift at the fire station 3 towns over from ours, my parents were on a camping trip hundreds of miles away and my brother was home 2 towns away with 3 littles. Needless to say, I got myself back to the ER once the pain meds wore off and I was taken right back to a little room in the VERY BACK of the ER. No one would tell me WHY I was asked to come back and the NP that called me was too busy to talk to me. Again, NOT the way things should be done!!!!

Once I was in the ER room in the back, an IV was placed and I was given another dose of IV Antibiotics. The IV was put in and I was left alone in the back of the ER once the drip started. Well, if you know anything about IV medications, you will know that the IV should be checked on when it is NOT on a Pump within a few minutes. Sadly, this was NOT the case for me and the IV started to back up with blood once the medication was finished! Again, NOT the way things should be done!!!! IMG_1285

Yep!! That is what happened due to being left ALONE in the BACK of the ER!!! HOW this was left alone to happen is BEYOND ME!! I was an Infusion Nurse at the time so I shut the clamp on the IV, grabbed the bag and marched my NOT so happy behind out to the nurses station!!!!! Only to be told to go back to the room and someone would be right in. Well, that RIGHT in did not happen so after about 15 minutes of waiting, I got up again and grabbed supplies that were on the counter!!! IMG_1286

Just as I sat down with the supplies needed ^^^, a different nurse than the first one walked in and asked what I was doing. UM!!! Something that should have already be done is what I wanted to say, but I just looked at her! Once she fixed my IV, she left me to go find the doctor since I STILL HAD NO WHY I WAS THERE!!!

Finally, I got to talk to the doctor to find out what was going on and that I was going to be admitted due to a kidney infection that had gone into my bloodstream!!!! Once the doctor left, the nurse came back in carrying a bag of medication and was about to spike the bag before telling me what she was giving me!!! Again, NOT the way things should be done!!!! Once she told me what the medication was, I REFUSED it before she could finish the name!!!

LEVAQUIN

Generic Name: levofloxacin

Brand Name: Levaquin

Yep!! That NASTY medication that carries Black Box warnings such as:

WARNING

SERIOUS ADVERSE REACTIONS INCLUDING TENDINITIS, TENDON RUPTURE, PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY, CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM EFFECTS AND EXACERBATION OF MYASTHENIA GRAVIS

Thankfully, the nurse did not question my response as to why I said NO to IV Levaquin!!!! Once I was taken up to the medical floor, I was kept on the medication that I first received when I arrived in the ER on day 1. I continued to receive Ceftriaxone until I was ready to be discharged on July 19, 2017.

IMG_1293

Thankfully I still had my humor while I was sicker than sick. 😉

The morning that I was due to be discharged the doctor that had visited me the day before came in to tell me that my blood work was looking better, but that I would need to be sent home on oral Levaquin due to the bacteria that was growing in my cultures. Of course, I told him right away that I did not feel it was SAFE and that I did not want to take it. Well……… Let’s just say that the doctor did NOT like me telling him no!!!!!! He went on to tell me that it was THE ONLY oral medication that I could take and that if I did not take Levaquin that I would have to have a PICC line placed to continue the IV antibiotics that I was currently getting for the next 12 days.

Well, having a PICC line as an Infusion Nurse would have meant that I would NOT be able to work due to lifting restrictions. Let, alone all the OTHER issues that come into play with having a PICC line. So, I asked the doctor to give me a little while think about my options. He then continued to tell me “That I was reading too much into it and that I knew too much!” Um, HELLO!!!! I was an RN for an Infusion Pharmacy!! So, YES I do know TOO MUCH!

After a few phone calls and text messages to my doctor and the pharmacist at work, I finally caved and said yes to Levaquin. However, I told the doctor that I was NOT going to take the first dose at home and that he had to give it to me during my admission because I did NOT feel safe taking it. The doctor did not like having to give me the first dose as an inpatient, but finally agreed and ordered it. You would think that if a patient was that concerned over a mediation, that he or she would look into different options instead of being BEYOND RUDE about it. After waiting about 4 hours from the first dose, I was finally to go home.

The first night home after a whirlwind of events that I NEVER want to go through again, I started having nightmares! Not just the regular run of the mill kind of nightmare where something happens, but detailed nightmares of things that you cannot watch in a horror type nightmares!!! Which, I now Know are in the LIST of Warnings and Precautions on Page 15 under 5.6 Central Nervous System Effects

So……. after 3 doses of Levaquin, I could BARELY walk!! My primary doctor took 1 look at me when I hobbled in for an appointment and told me that I was having an Adverse Reaction to Levaquin!!! Hmmmmmm, did not try to tell the hospital doctor that I did not feel it was safe for me to take??????

Sadly, due to NOT following my GUT and agreeing to taking Levaquin, I was off work for almost 10 weeks due to muscle weakness!! And! To this day I still deal with muscle weakness and other issues that hand strength or should I say, lack there of.

If you or someone you know has had adverse reactions to Fluoroquinolones or if it is prescribed to someone over the age of 60, please say something!!!!!! See warning below regarding age.

WARNING: Fluoroquinolones, including LEVAQUIN® , are associated with an increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture in all ages. This risk is further increased in older patients usually over 60 years of age, in patients taking corticosteroid drugs, and in patients with kidney, heart or lung transplants [see Warnings and Precautions (5.1)]. Fluoroquinolones, including LEVAQUIN®, may exacerbate muscle weakness in persons with myasthenia gravis. Avoid LEVAQUIN® in patients with a known history of myasthenia gravis [see Warnings and Precautions (5.2)].

OMG! I Passed! I Am Now An RN!!!!

rn lic

Holy Moly!!!

I seriously do not even know where to begin on how to explain how I feel right now.

I am beyond relieved, but stressed, exhausted, and overwhelmed!

Today has been a whirlwind of emotions that have gone from fear to excitement to exhaustion.

The last 5 years have been leading up to today and now that it is here, I am a bit overwhelmed.

I have spent many days and nights studying at the kitchen table while my friends and family were going about their lives as my life was put on hold the best I could due to nursing school.

Going back to school at the age of 37 with ZERO college credits and starting night school while working full time during the day was not something that I ever thought I would be able to do.

However, I was determined to do it and succeed so that I could better myself and help others.

Little did I know just how difficult nursing school would be and how it would turn into a full time job while trying to juggle family life.

The 3 years leading up to the nursing program while doing my pre req’s was not a walk in the park, but they were cake walk compared to starting the nursing program at 40!

Even though there were many of days when I wanted to throw in the towel when things got tough during the last 9 months of school, I am so glad that I stuck it out and completed the program!

I graduated  June 16, 2015, I waited 6 weeks before I was able to schedule my state board exam and then another 4 weeks before taking my exam.

During the 6 weeks that I was waiting for the authorization to test, many of my classmates were scheduling their exams and passing NCLEX-RN!

I started to get discouraged as I waited, but I took the time to unwind a little bit after 5 years of school and I finally got my authorization to test on July 23rd.

Once I scheduled my exam, I started to study everyday for the exam and I completely went off of all social media the last 2 weeks in order to be able to focus on the exam and not get wrapped up in things that I did not have time for.

BTW- If you are reading this blog post from a Facebook or Twitter link, I am still taking a break for a couple of more weeks from social media so that I can continue to de-stress and go on a very much needed vacation. ❤

I took my exam the morning of August 20th and I have been freaking out thinking that I did not pass the exam.

However, I found out today that I am now a Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of California! 🙂

I do not think that there is anything that can truly prepare one for the NCLEX-RN exam!

I did every single Kaplan qbank question, practice exam, and trainer test to study with, some of them multiple times until I got them correct and I still did not feel that I had passed when I left the testing center.

I did do the Pearson View Trick when I was done with the exam  in the parking lot of the testing center and I got the “Good Popup”, however, I did not feel that it was 100% that I had passed!

Pearson View Trick RN

There is something so mental that happens to you when you do this exam and you have to wait for your results, but I cannot explain it to be able to put it into words!

Only that it is BRUTAL! 😥

On the way home from my exam, I started to think of a backup plan for my career since I knew that I could never (would not) take that exam again!

Not only did I not want to pay the crazy fees to retake the exam, but I never wanted to put myself and my family through that stress again!

And now the REAL FUN of looking for a position as a New Grad begins! ❤

If you have any questions about studying for NCLEX-RN or how to do the Pearson View Trick, send me an email and I will be happy to help!

Reiki and Inner Peace

WARNING!

Long Personal Blog Post!

Who is the MOST important person in your life?

Many will say my kids or my spouse, however, YOU are THE most Important person in your life!

“One cannot help another, without first helping themselves.”

This is something that I have known for years, but I have struggled with for many years.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I have a very hard time saying NO.

However, for some reason, I tell myself NO when I shouldn’t and then I struggle with trying to make everyone happy.

Sadly, by trying to make everyone else happy, I am not happy and I have struggling to make it seem as  I am.

I know that some will not be happy with me with my decision to put myself first, but I cannot let it bother me.

In my journey to wellness, I have been learning more and more about myself and how I work on the inside.

As I learn how I tick, I am discovering that I MUST take time for myself in order to be able to help others in the way that I want and need in my nursing career.

I have to STOP taking on more than I can handle and start stepping back to be able to have inner peace inside myself instead of a constant struggle.

I am the type to take on too much and then let myself suffer due to not being able to have downtime for myself and my family.

I have spent the last 5 years pursuing my nursing degree and I am now working on getting my state board license so I can begin my career as an RN.

Thankfully, I have discovered Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) and I have become a Second Degree Reiki Practitioner.

Through my journey of learning Reiki, I have started to rebalance my energy and I am no longer tolerant to negative energy.

The world has far too much negative energy and I am doing what I can to avoid any and ALL negative things in my life.

As my journey continues, my goal is to be able to bring Reiki into the lives of others to help them find their inner peace.

To bring myself back into alignment, I MUST detach myself from things that are no longer beneficial for my mind, body, and soul.

In doing this detachment, I am embarking on a social media detox for a minimum of 21 days while I rebalance my energy.

I will continue to journal my experiences as I rebalance my energy, however, it will not be a daily practice.

Instead, I am going to begin a daily practice of taking care of myself by meditating, performing self reiki, spending time outside, and enjoying my family.

While I take on this part of my wellness journey, I will continue to pray and send healing energy to my family and friends.

If you are feeling lost and unconnected in your life, I invite you to embark in finding what makes you tick.

I also would like to encourage you to get outside, go for nice walk or find a quite place to take in the beauty of our world around us.

If you would like to learn more about Reiki, please feel free to contact me via email at juliamccabe72@gmail.com
